17 August: Parsi New Year Navroz celebrated

August 19, 2019
Parsi New Year, also known as Navroz or Jamshedi Navroz, is celebrated every year on August 17 to mark the beginning of the new Iranian calendar. In Persian, Nav means new and Roz means day and together translating to ‘new day’. It is celebrated for health, wealth, prosperity and productivity. The central feature of this festive day is visiting Fire Temple and offering prayers to deities Khorshed and Meher, who are considered the presiding deities of sun and moon respectively.

Background

Jamshedi Navroz got its name from legendary King of Persia – Jamshed, who is said to have introduced solar calculation in Parsi Calendar. In Iran and other parts, Zoroastrians celebrate Persian New Year using Fasli/Bastnai calendar according to which this day falls on moment of Vernal Equinox and marks beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, mostly falls on March 21st every year. However, Parsis in India follow Shahenshahi calendar (which does not account for leap years) and hence Persian New Year in India is celebrated mostly on August 17th, approximately 150-200 days after its original day of vernal equinox (Spring Equinox). Celebrations of Jamshedi Navroz or Parsi New Year are similar to Nowruz spring festival where people celebrate commencement of New Year amidst exchange of gifts, donations, new clothes, house cleaning and lots of fun and frolic.

Zoroastrians

Parsis (are also known as Zoroastrians) as they follow Zoroastrianism, one of the oldest known monotheistic religions founded by Prophet Zarathustra or Zoroaster (Greek) in Pre-Islam era of ancient Iran approximately 3500 years ago in 650 BC. After the invasion of Islamic armies in 7th Century, Zoroastrians fled Persia and mainly dwelled in India.
India is home to the largest group of Parsis from around the world where the community has been a significant part of the economic and industrial growth of the country and lives in harmony with various other religions like Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims, Christians and many more.

PM Modi launches Paika Rebellion Chair in Utkal University

December 25, 2018
PM Modi announced setting up of a Chair on the Paika Rebellion, in Utkal University, Bhubaneswar. He also released a commemorative stamp and coin on the Paika Rebellion.

Paika Rebellion

The Paika Rebellion of 1817 in Odisha briefly shook the foundations of British rule in the eastern part of India. Paikas were the peasant militias of the Gajapati rulers of Odisha and rendered military service to the king during times of war while taking up cultivation during times of peace.
The British had established their sway over Bengal Province and Madras Province to the north and south of Odisha and occupied Odhisa in 1803. The Gajapati Ruler of Odisha Mukunda Deva-ll was a minor then and the resistance by Jai Rajguru, the custodian of Mukunda Deva-II, was put down brutally.
As British began consolidating their rule and started tinkering with the revenue system, they faced the anger of the people of Odhisa. A few years later Paikas under Baxi Jagabandhu, the hereditary chief of the militia army of the Gajapati King rose in rebellion by taking the support of tribals and other sections of society in March 1817. Paikas attacked British symbols of power, setting ablaze police stations, administrative offices and the treasury during their march towards Khurda, from where the British fled. The Paikas were supported by the rajas of Kanika, Kujang, Nayagarh and Ghumusar and zamindars, village heads and ordinary peasants. The Rebellion spread quickly.
British were initially taken aback and then tried to regain lost ground but faced stiff resistance from the Paikas. There was a widespread suppression. Rebels fought a guerilla war till 1819 but were captured and killed. Baxi Jagabandhu was finally arrested in 1825 and died in captivity in 1829.
The Paika Rebellion enjoys a cult status in Odisha. Children in Odhisa grow up with hearing stories of the brave fight against the British.

National Salt Satyagraha Memorial

January 31, 2019
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the National Salt Satyagraha Memorial at Dandi in Navsari district, Gujarat. The memorial is conceived as an experiential journey recreating the spirit and the energy of the 1930 Dandi March led by Mahatma Gandhi and 80 of his fellow Satyagrahis.
The memorial takes the visitors step by step through visualisation of events to aid them in understanding the methodology of Satyagraha, which finally led to India’s Independence from the British colonial rule.
The Memorial is the project of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India and is advised by a High-Level Dandi Memorial Committee (HLDMC) with IIT Bombay as a Design Coordination Agency.

Historical Background of the Salt Satyagraha

From the very beginning of British Rule in India, the salt tax was considered to be a good source of income. The beginning was made in the form of ‘land rent’ and ‘transit charges’, and in 1762, it was consolidated into duty.
As a result of the duty, India and in particular Bengal and its surrounding provinces were rendered dependent upon imported salt from Liverpool and elsewhere. The indigenous industry oppressed with the burden of extravagant charges was unable to compete with its English rival.
The salt tax/duties on the annual requirement of a family amounted at one time up to nearly two months’ wages of a labourer. The Indian National Congress from the very inception opposed the salt tax. Nationalist leaders such as Dadabhai Naoroji and GK Gokhale had particularly raised their voice against it.
Gandhiji had begun raising opposition to oppressive duties on common salt right from his student days in London. All these culminated in Gandhiji selecting Satyagraha against salt taxes as the key issue in 1930 while leading the civil disobedience movement for India’s freedom from the British colonial rule.
The Salt tax was chosen by Gandhi during the civil disobedience movement because it not only appeared to be basically unjust in themselves but also because it symbolised an unpopular, unrepresentative alien government.

Govt. launches NOC Online Application Processing System (NOAPS)

August 28, 2019
Union Ministry of Tourism launched the integrated NOC (No Objection Certificate) Online Application Processing System for National Monuments Authority (NMA) to seek approval for construction around protected monuments in 6 states.

About NOC Online Application Processing System

Background: In order to automate process of granting NOC for construction-related work in prohibited and regulated areas, National Monuments Authority (NMA) designed, developed and implemented a web-enabled software application dubbed as ‘NOC Online Application Processing System’ (NOAPS) and launched the ‘NOAPS Non Single window system’ in September 2015. Later, ‘NOAPS Single window system’ was officially launched on 1 May 2016. As of August 2019, NOAPS was limited to only 5 urban local bodies in Delhi and 1 civic body in Mumbai, however from now onwards the facility has been expanded to 6 more states.
Six states: Madhya Pradesh (378), Andhra Pradesh (110), Haryana (15), Punjab (10), Jharkhand (3) and Telangana (1).  In total, 517 local bodies have made it online.
Portal has integration with Indian Space Research Organization’s (ISRO) ‘Smarac’ mobile app, through which applicant can traverse his plot and submit geo coordinates of land, along with uploading images into NIC (National Informatics Centre) portal.
Process: Desired applicant needs to fill up a single form which is being sent to concerned agencies by Urban Local Body (ULBs), from whom NOC is required. NMA on its part will communicate its decision to the local body within 15-30 working days, bringing down the time limit from 90 days. This time limit is prescribed in Ancient Monuments and Archeological Sites and Remains (AMASR) Act.
Need: With increasing population pressure as well as increase of urbanization, development and growth there is growing pressure on land including land around centrally protected monuments. However as this often affects site or monument adversely, it is important that such growth around centrally protected monuments is properly regulated such that it balances the needs of individuals and growth and development on one hand and requirements of preservation and protection of these monuments on the other.
Significance: NOAPS will now ease the process to seek approval for construction in prohibited and regulated areas around Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) protected monuments in 6 states (517 local bodies). By this integration, NMA has made a humble effort towards the Mantra of ‘Reform, Perform and Transform’.
NOTE: National Monuments Authority (NMA) functions under Union Ministry of Culture. NMA has been established as per provisions of The Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains (AMASR) (Amendment and Validation) Act, 2010.

Good Friday is also referred to as Black Friday, Great Friday, Easter Friday or Holy Friday. Good Friday coincides with the beginning of the Jewish festival of Passover.

Significance of the Day

Even though the term Good Friday is not present in the Holy Bible, the Christian religious text portrays the story of how Jesus was betrayed by Judas which led to his arrest.
Jesus was beaten by the Roman soldiers after being nailed to a cross which he was asked to carry to his site of the crucifixion. Even though the term ‘Good’ associated with Good Friday is a contradiction to the events of this day, people believe that the term is associated with the words ‘pious or holy’.
Good Friday is followed by Easter Sunday, the day on which Jesus was resurrected from death.

GI Tag: Kolhapuri chappals

June 21, 2019
The Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks (CGPDTM) has granted Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Kolhapuris, the ethnic leather chappal (footwear) to four districts in each state of Maharashtra and Karnataka. These 8 districts are- Kolhapur, Sangli, Solapur and Satara districts of Maharashtra and Belgaum, Dharwad, Bagalkot and Bijapur districts of Karnataka.

Kolhapuri Chappal

Uniqueness: These sturdy leather chappals are hand-crafted and tanned using vegetable dyes and the art of making them is passed down one generation to another.
History: As per GI application made by two states of Mharashtra and Karnataka, Kolhapuris can be traced back to 12th century when King Bijjal ruled Bidar (in Karnataka). King’s Prime Minister Vishwaguru Basavanna, wanted to create a casteless society and remove stigma attached to cobbler community, thus, the community embraced Lingayat faith and used its skills to start producing footwear that came to be known equally for its ruggedness and regal bearing.
‘Kolhapuri’ as a Brand was created only at beginning of 20th century when footwear began to be traded in Kolhapur (Maharashtra). Later, Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj of Kolhapur encouraged its production and 29 tanning centres were opened during his rule in Kolhapur.

Benefits of GI Tag

It will help artisans export these chappals and also tie up with e-commerce giants such as Flipkart and Amazon.
With GI tag now these local artisans get legal support. Thus, anyone who is going to copy this can be punished.

Significance of GI tag

Getting GI tag will open large markets, both domestic and international to artisans who produce Kolhapuris. Also, getting GI tag for Kolhapuri means that footwear produced only in these 8 districts will qualify to carry tag of being Kolhapuris.

What is Geographical Indications?

GI is used on products/items which have specific geographical origin and possess qualities, reputation and distinctiveness which is essentially attributable to its origin in that defined geographical locality.
Validity: The tag is valid for a period of 10 years following which it can be renewed.
GI India: Recently Union Minister of Commerce and Industry launched logo and tagline for Geographical Indications (GI) of India. The 1st product to get a GI tag in India was Darjeeling tea (2004).
The sui generis Act for protection of GI in India is Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 (GI Act). This Act was enacted by India so as to comply with Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) by World Trade Organisation (WTO).

Union Textiles Minister Inaugurates Titanwala Museum in Rajasthan

February 26, 2019
Union Minister for Textiles Smriti Irani inaugurated the ‘Titanwala Museum’ in Bagru that showcases the Chhipa community’s Bagru hand-block printing.
Acknowledging the effort of Suraj Narayan Titanwala, who took the initiative of setting up the museum, Minister said that the museum is an example that art and culture are not dependent on the government for being nurtured or preserved.

Bagru hand-block printing

Bagru printing is one of the traditional techniques of printing with natural colour followed by the chippas of Rajasthan. The Bagru hand-block printing has a history of over 1000 years.
The fabric is first soaked in Fuller’s earth and then dipped into turmeric water to get a tone of yellow colour. Then the dyed fabric is stamped with the beautiful designs known as blocks.
Block printing is a labour intensive process. It requires a lot of skillfulness, time and tolerance power of artisan. The wooden blocks of teak-wood are used for printing the design which is soaked in oil overnight and then washed before putting in to use.
The cloth to be printed is soaked in the solution of clay and other chemicals to make the fabric soften and then dried before used for printing. Neat stamping is foremost to get the appealing prints. After printing, the cloth is left for drying in sun for final touch-up.

South India’s earliest Sanskrit Inscription found in A.P.

December 26, 2019
The Epigraphy Branch of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has discovered the earliest Sanskrit inscription to have been discovered in South India as on date. This significant finding is also the earliest epigraphic evidence for ‘Saptamatrika’ cult so far. The discovery was made in Chebrolu village in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh. The inscription came to light when some local villagers informed ASI authorities about a pillar with some engravings when they were restoring and repairing local Bheemeshwara temple. ASI called for conservation and preservation of pillar given its historical importance.

Key Findings

What is Saptamatrikas? They are a group of seven female deities worshipped in Hinduism as personifying the energy of their respective consorts. There are references of Saptamatrika worship in early Kadamba copper plates as well as early Chalukyas and Eastern Chalukya copper plates. But this new discovery predates them by almost 200 years.
The Inscription found: It is in Sanskrit and in Brahmi characters and was issued by Satavahana king Vijaya in 207 A.D. The inscription records construction of a prasada (temple), a mandapa (a pavilion for public rituals) and consecration of images on southern side of temple by a person named Kartika for merit of king at temple of Bhagavathi (Goddess) Saktimatruka (Saptamatrika) at Tambrape (which is the ancient name of Chebrolou). All the available records when verified, proved that Chebrolu inscription of Satavahana king Vijaya issued in his 5th regnal year (207 A.D.) is also the earliest datable Sanskrit inscription from South India so far. Until now the Nagarjunakonda inscription of Ikshavaku king Ehavala Chantamula issued in his 11th regnal year (4th century A.D.) was considered the earliest Sanskrit inscription in South India.
The place also yielded another inscription which is in Prakrit language and of Brahmi characters and belongs to 1st century A.D. This is thus the earliest epigraphic reference to Mutts and records gift of a cloister mandapa and chaitya to bhavatho (Lord) of the Gadasa Mutt by a person hailing from Tabaava.
